Bait

I need a few new bait reciepes.  I am trapping hogs in a field of sweet corn and field corn.  As you can guess dried corn does not work well.  Currently I am using a mixture of fermented wheat and corn.  We have just started and have seen a little bit of interest.  Are there any suggestions?

Re: Bait

Try mixing sum cutbait / sum type of fish to yer bait.Hard to catch hogs in a trap when the roasting ears are ready.

Re: Bait

You need to contact kevin@texasboars.com, he has some scents that never fail. One is Grim Reaper and the other is Hog in Heat scent. They work everytime after the hogs get a smell of it.

Re: Bait

I have had good luck using soured grain that I get from a nearby grain storage 'elevator'. They periodically clean out the grain silos and just pile the old stuff outside where it gets rained on, sits there and ferments and finally rots or turns into compost.  It is usually corn, maize, wheat and cotton seed meal.  Usually, you can distinguish between the various grains that are there cause they are often just dumped one atop another. It is quite odifirous, depending on whether it has rained recently.  If not, it is a simple matter to just re-wet the stuff.  Hogs love it!  I have heard about an idea which said to soak fresh corn in raspberry jello for a day or two, this met with mixed results.

Re: Bait

I am new to this. I'd like to learn some good ideas on building my traps and baiting. Iwould like to make a little money off these critters as they are overrunning us around here. Thanks for your help.

Re: Bait

You could take a 1/2 gallon of buttermilk and add to grain, corn or whatever and give that a try

Re: Bait

I use whole corn, strawberry jello, and cheap beer. It gives a sweet smell with a funk smell. I am going to try strawberry kool aid next. I will let you know how that works. I am trying out some cheaper ways to bait, to see if it works.
